TEXTILE INDUSTRY POLICY ADVISOR Wanted at Gatsby Africa

Are you passionate about driving reform for sector development in Africa?  Do you understand business, public policy decision-making processes and industry development? Would you like to support Tanzania’s Cotton-to-Clothing Strategy and the transformation of its textiles and garments sector?
The Tanzanian Textiles Development Unit (TDU) is a Gatsby Africa initiative jointly funded by the UK’s Department for International Development, and housed within the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment.
The Textile Industry Policy Advisor has a crucial role to play helping to address the barriers to investment and growth in the sector.  S/he will work closely with the TDU team, government and industry partners to formulate, advocate and implement public sector policy that supports industry reform and growth.  The Advisor will also provide policy insight and analysis of key sector data, and support monitoring and evaluation and communications.
This is a technical role which requires:
  • Experience and understanding of market development solutions
  • An understanding of government and business. Knowledge of textiles and garments production or manufacturing generally would be an advantage
  • An understanding of public policy decision-making processes and of the means of influencing policy effectively
  • Extremely strong analytical skills, including the ability to analyse financial statements
  • Excellent work planning and communication skills
The ideal candidate will have strong intellectual curiosity, the ability to think strategically and laterally to solve complex problems, sound judgement and private sector DNA. S/he will have at least five years’ experience in some combination of private sector and/or public policy analysis role in Africa. Specialist knowledge of textiles, in-depth experience of working in Tanzania and fluent Swahili would be a significant advantage.
